*Apple iPhone 12 mini saw a very weak demand in the market.
*It generated only 6 per cent in sales for the new iPhone series.
*The biggest rivals to iPhone 12 mini are iPhone 11 and iPhone XR.
Apple is riding high on the iPhone 12 sales worldwide. The success of the 5G iPhone lineup continued through the holiday season and accounted for 76 per cent of the total iPhone sales between October and November, according to a new report by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). But while the iPhone 12 series, as a whole, did well in terms of sales, the iPhone 12 mini failed to impress buyers. The report says that Apple’s smallest 5G iPhone garnered only 6 per cent of the total iPhone sales during October through November.
The lacklustre sale of the iPhone 12 mini (Review) is because of the continued sales of the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 for much less price in all the markets, per the CIRP report. The iPhone 12 mini costs $699 in the US (Rs 69,900 in India) while the iPhone 11 sells for $599 (Rs 54,900 in India) and the iPhone XR is down to $499 (Rs 47,900 in India). The huge price gaps between the three iPhone models compelled buyers to go for previous-generation devices. “It seems that its higher price point compared to those three models limited the iPhone 12 mini appeal,” CIRP mentioned in the report. Both iPhone XR and iPhone 11 have a larger screen than the iPhone 12 mini’s.
Moreover, the 5G appeal of the iPhone 12 mini did not quite work well. That is because several markets are still awaiting the 5G rollout (including India). Specifications-wise, the iPhone 12 mini is more or less the same as the iPhone 11. There are two cameras on the back, water resistance, glass back, and wireless charging. The display on iPhone 12 mini, however, is smaller than the iPhone 11 display. For a customer, these certain differences zeroed into the decision of not preferring the iPhone 12 mini over the iPhone 11, and even the iPhone XR.
A supply chain for the Apple iPhone models also recently said that the iPhone 12 mini sales were “sluggish” despite the success of the iPhone 12 lineup. There is a low interest in the iPhone 12 mini in the market, which could be a lesson for Apple. And it is not like this was unprecedented. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously said that the iPhone 12 mini will not see a high demand in the market and that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will outshine all other models in the lineup.
The iPhone 12 cornered the largest share of 27 per cent in the total sales of 5G iPhone lineup in the US, according to the report. The other two top-end models, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max secured around 20 per cent share in the sales in the months of October and November. This is a huge jump from the sales numbers of the iPhone 11 from 2019. The iPhone 11 devices accounted for 69 per cent of total iPhone sales in the US, per the CIRP report.
But there cannot be a winner because Apple launched the iPhone 12 series models in two waves. “There was no clear leader among the new models, with sales evenly distributed among iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Max. In contrast, in 2019, iPhone 11 had an incredible 39% of sales, with iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max combining for only 30% of sales.”
